The 9th annual Great Adirondack Birding Celebration (GABC) is scheduled for June 3-5, 2011, at the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) in Paul Smiths. The Adirondack Park Institute will be hosting this popular special event.

 

The 2011 Great Adirondack Birding Celebration will feature birding trips, lectures, workshops and the popular Teddy Roosevelt Birding Challenge. Registration opens for trips/programs on May 1, 2011. Call (518) 327-3376. In the meantime, stop by the Paul Smiths VIC for hands-on birding activities throughout the year. Our naturalists can help you find the Adirondack birds on your list.

Check-in and registration packet pick up begins at 9 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Friday, June 3rd at Paul Smiths. Friday's events include a Boreal Ecology Workshop on Friday afternoon at the Massawepie Mire followed by a dessert reception and an Owl Prowl beginning at 9 p.m.  Saturday is filled with exciting field trips and informative events throughout the day. The keynote address at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4th, will be given by Scott Weidensaul, author, naturalist and renowned bird expert. (PS VIC Theater). Bird List

Some of the boreal species that birders will seek include the black-backed woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, boreal chickadee, spruce grouse, Bicknell's thrush and a variety of migrating warblers. Trail Map

The Paul Smiths VIC contains every habitat type found in the Adirondack Park with the exception of alpine vegetation. Included on the property is a 60-acre marsh, five ponds, several brooks and swamps, bogs, fens, and varied forest types; most notably northern boreal forest. The 14-mile trail system traverses a variety of habitats with extensive boardwalks through wetland ecosystems.
